Re: Knee Pain
Charoo advice worked for me, although less of the knees, but caused by running so stretching tight calves, hamstrings, glutes, IT band, back pain and sciatica. I learnt that everything is connected and has a knock on effect. Sitting behind a desk and or sedentary lifestyle magnifiers the problem. Stay active, keep moving, exercise leg and core muscles with exercises and weights. Sit down/stand up electric desks are good if you need to use one. Surgery is great when it works. Knees, hips are higher success rate than backs 50/50 as high risk of hitting a nerve going in. Good luck.

For info, I'm 57, 5' 7", 14 stone and a regular hillwalker with a pull-y Staffy so although not super active I'm not a couch potato either.

Many thanks for the replies, some interesting reading there.

Considering the amount of sport i had played constantly for nigh on 30 years solid... football 3 times a week + training... Rugby... cricket in summer... weights... some proper wallops on me kneecap including 2 right knee dislocations ...my knees at the age of 55 are superb... back is fucked but knees no probs...no aches nothing... probably as i stopped running on concrete when i was in my early 20s helped....

Re: Knee Pain
My GP said the same wear and tear winds me up. Went Private saw a Knee Surgeon 2 weeks Later I'm having the cartilage trimmed and knee flushed out. That was 10 years ago and have not looked back.

I feel wear and Tear is code for we don't have the budget. Get yourself Bupa or kick up a fuss, Physio without knowing what is wrong may do more harm than good,

Re: Knee Pain
I used to run a a lot and at some point I was getting knee pain on the outside of my knees. I then got a bit of weakness where they used to give out. For the last 10 years I have been taking Glucosamine Sulphate which is a shell fish derived supplement supposed to replace or at least stop it from degenerating the cartilage in the knees. I take 1500 mg in one tablet a day. I also do quite a lot of strengthening exercises a few times a week lunges etc and I am now pain free and the weakness has gone. a I have stopped running though. I'm 64.

"The challenge is keeping it up. But then keeping it up always becomes a challenge in your forties"

I hear ya, but anyway back to the topic of knee pain - i used to run on the road and hard surfaces a lot and its catching up with me now. I get pain when going up and down stairs, especially after running, and anything that requires bending knees or squatting. I dont run outside anymore but I can still run on a treadmill, but something isnt right.

Re: Knee Pain
Mashed advice mirrors my experience.

I've had wear and tear knee pain since my 20s. Had physio give me useful advice saying to go to gym to build up all the other muscles in my legs to reduce strain on knees. Can't do the leg curl machine, the one that's the opposite to the leg curl... Because both put too much pressure on my knee. Also squats are out.

But just using adductor, abductor and leg press machines as well as leg strengthening programme on the gym fancy exercise bikes has made a significant difference after just a month. The challenge is keeping it up. But then keeping it up always becomes a challenge in your forties.

Re: Knee Pain
I had a bad leg break 3 years ago had the nailing of my tibia done, in most cases causes knee pain.

I’m squatting 100kg comfortably again now and more if in a strength phase and can run half marathon in respectable time.

I get sore after but I use Therabody leg compression sleeves after tough leg workouts and longer runs which generates new blood flow to the knee and removes the waste - need to get in them sheepish after training for max benefit but I think they are very good.

Also a massage gun on surrounding muscles, foam rolling and stretching, bad knees can be caused by tightness in hips, glutes, hamstrings, IT band and calves.

Most body pains can be traced back to the hips.

Strengthen, lengthen, train, rest, recover, keep active.

He's probably hiding the fact that you need a knee replacement but you have fuckall chance of getting it done for at least five years

Re: Knee Pain
Done both knee cartilages between 14 and 16 playing football and rugby, then both again as well as fusing 6 of my lumbar vertebrae in a head on car accident at 28 then both knees again playing in goal in mid 30s so switched exclusively to cricket, then moved and stopped playing competitive sports in mid-40s, now have both hips playing up and have been advised I will probably need them and both knee joints replacing within the next 10 years.

Getting older is shit. Losing weight and dropping the weight regime helped, just do more regular cv exercise these days.

Re: Knee Pain
For me, sitting at a desk sometimes leads to knee pain.

Playing football doesn't.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to convince anyone to pay me to play football...

Re: Knee Pain
You’ve had some good tips here.

What is your weight and general fitness like? As I’ve got older I’ve definitely noticed the benefits of doing weights and losing a few pound in terms of my joints. For older men lifting weights is essential to strengthen joints and increase bone density. Would definitely see a good physio who is in shape himself (might as well have a beefcake giving you a rub down as well as not trusting a fatty to know what’s best).

Get good knee braces too - they help.

Re: Knee Pain
Difficult to say without knowing what the wear and tear is but my right knee is not great (the patella was't going where it should and was snagging my femur).
Exercises sorted curtesy of a physio to stregthen the muscles and put less on the knee joint itself. Was also told to do low impact work in the gym (swimming and crosstrainer) as the cartilage in the knee was also in bad shape and running was off the menu.
Hope it works for you.

Re: Knee Pain
Had similar for years. Came out of nowhere. Saw physios etc and had *some* relief but noticed it went away the more time I was in the gym and more active (walking everywhere etc). So I did more of what made it go away. Now its gone, completely.

I'm not a doctor, a physio, a PT etc so take this with a huge pinch of salt: a lot of joint pain seems to be caused by the muscles around it being weak. If you can strengthen yourself around the joint, the joint itself won't be under as much stress.

Without knowing how old you are or your activity level etc, this is just a shot in the dark, its helped me, hopefully helps you

Would go to a PT or physio to ask about ways to do the above, before jumping in though. Good luck

Re: Knee Pain
Not sure if this helps, but before I left Thailand to work in the middle east, one of my knees was giving me serious jip.

The local (effectively cottage) hospital had me on a regime of wrapping my knee in hot towels for 20 minutes, then 10 minutes of ultrasound. Every other day for about a fortnight.

It seemed to have worked as I've only ever felt since then the slightest of twinges - certainly not what a real man would call pain - since then.

Re: Knee Pain
My left knee used to give me stabbing pain (even when lying down) and would collapse sometimes when walking
I had a total knee replacement back in the spring and it's so much better although the healing has taken time with infection an ever present problem
It was put down to an arthritic knee with bone on bone contact causing the problem
It's the best thing I've done - no pain anymore

Worth investigating.

As ever with private medicine, worth being slightly cautious with any advice given that involves spending money there.

Both of mine have been kaput for over a year now with Ostroarthritis and walking without sticks has become almost impossible at times. Had two courses of Cortisone injections which haven't really helped.

Hope you find some relief AI it's no fun at all
